Spread under the surreal backdrop of its' massive medieval castle Arundel bows colourful and serene, like a picturesque old town in a Dutch painting.
Less than an hour and a half from London and just a few minutes walk from the station, it welcomes the visitor with lazy cows, a quiet but restless river, a small treasure of a charity shop and various other consumerist - or not - attractions, in the above order, for the capital-addled visitor.
Busy Tarrant street is packed with quaint and modern little cafés among odd souvenir and art shops, where you grab a cake for a carb boost before you venture the ascent towards more imposing beauty: Arundel Cathedral and the moody cemetery across the street from it.
You'll hike the atmospheric Swanbourne Lake and the Wetlands; and right opposite from there, in an alley narrow-as-can-be, hides the Arundel Ghost Experience. For the occasional freaks in town (like us).
In the warm summer nights, Arundel festival welcomes local music talent and, yes, a few trendy fans among the typical groups of children and pensioners.
It's boring, traditional and fairy-tale all at once. A nature walk in a gothic backdrop.
